Twelve-spotted Skimmer (Libellula pulchella), mature male. Only mature males develop the ten white spots between the twelve brown ones.

Shiny

This dragonfly looks wet in the early morning. The dew was very heavy and the air was very muggy, so it may actually be wet and waiting to dry off before the hunting begins.

Moon, waxing gibbous, on 5/2/12

Hey Paul it was more just for information than as a challenge. We are expecting rains this weekend and I probably won't get to 'shoot the (full) moon' on Saturday night, so I went out last night and got this shot at 8:57 for today's entry to remind everyone about the largest full moon of the year. Check the moonrise table for you locale. Should be a beauty if you get to see it. Beware of Werewolves!

Multi-colored Asian Ladybug Beetle (Harmonia axyridis)

Imported from Asia to control aphids and scale insects these beetles have become pests themselves by invading homes to overwinter, and if you have ever been around them in the fall of the year you probably know they will bite you if you let them!

Fast Flyer

The Silver-Spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus) is one of those butterflies that can fly faster than most birds when it wants to. "It has a dashing, impetuous flight, starting with a plunge and stopping as abruptly; it startles the collector by its sudden advent, bewilders him by its unexpected dashes, and then vanishes like a swift arrow," admirably described by Scudder. http://www.massaudubon.org/butterflyatlas/index.php?id=5

... inside the Clinton County Courthouse looking at the dome and surrounding arches. This building was constructed from 1915-1919, and what might appear to be marble in the columns is actually hard plaster polished smooth to a shiny finish.

Kennedy's Emerald

Somatochlora kennedii is what I am calling this dragonfly after much research, but there are several emeralds. This Order of insects, the Odonata, is so vast!

I barely noticed this one while sneaking up to shoot a Wood Nymph. Since it was so early in the morning the dragonfly was not moving to swiftly and stayed hanging onto the stem long enough for me to get closer and closer before it finally flew away. I had never seen one of this species before, ever.

Larger than life! These butterflies are actually about the size of a dime with their wings fully spread.

What is it or where was this photo taken? Any guesses? *addendum - yes, a silo it is, not for grain but for silage, at a farm that no longer has dairy cattle. After the big dairy buyout there are lots of abandoned silos in the heartland. The one in the photo is pretty old, made out of concrete and stone - about 40 feet tall.

I certainly appreciate your comments on my various daily photos, and even more than that I enjoy looking at yours. I have been busy, too busy to spend too much time on the computer lately so I have been negligent in commenting or even viewing many great shots. Two thumbs up to all you photographers who are part of this community. ;-) Perry

Spider from Mars communicates with the Mother Ship using ray of light

So far my investigation leads me to believe this is the Orchard Orb Weaver spider, Leucauge venusta.

Eastern Cicada Killer dragging its victim across the violets

The Eastern Cicada Killing Wasp paralyzes the Cicada and takes it back to its burrow in the ground where she lays her eggs on the cicada and covers it with dirt. The eggs hatch and larvae feed on the Cicadas in the "nest cell."
